Monadnock 4-H Robotics: 4-H club and FIRST team

Published in Blog Tagged under Written by Brighid

When our club goes to an outreach event many people ask us about being a 4-H club. Some people remember being in 4-H when they were a child or a teen and robotics wasn't part of the projects available to them. We can all identify long standing 4-H projects like raising sheep, showing poultry and preparing for a fashion show. And sometimes other FIRST team members want to know why we're a 4-H club and not an after school club at the high school.

So why is Monadnock 4-H Robotics part of both organizations? We have the resources two fantastic organizations available to us. It's often said that a 4-H club is a person's first step into the university system. In New Hampshire, 4-H is part of the University of New Hampshire, a land-grant, sea-grant and space-grant research institution. The 4-H motto "Learn by Doing" could have been coined by Dr. Woodie Flowers, a celebrated educator and FIRST Executive Advisory Board Co-Chair. Dr. Flowers is passionate about experiential learning; the process where we make the most and deepest connections in a subject.

Did you see us at the Temple Harvest Fair last weekend? Our club members were at the fire house with an obstacle course set up so area teens and children could take a turn driving our 2016 FIRST Robotics Competition robot. We talked with a lot of great people and had a terrific time showing everyone from grandparents to toddlers how much fun you can have in a 4-H robotics club.
